Developers bought the building back in 2016 for $1.7 million, and sold again in 2019 for $3.6 million. Last September, a smaller fire damaged the empty building.Įl Camion has been shut since April 2019, after six years of operating just across from Ballard High School in the former Zesto’s location. This is the second fire that’s broken out in the former El Camion building. My Ballard Facebook Group member Shane posted photos of the fire, saying it was a large response. SFD managed to control the fire within an hour, and no injuries were reported. Seattle Fire responded to the blaze early Saturday morning, with multiple engines called to fight the 3:30 a.m. We completed the meal with some arm twisting of our server by selecting the Tres Leches cake ($8.50).The former El Camion location at the corner of 15th Ave NW and NW 65th St has caught fire for the second time since being vacant. The sauce went extremely well with the meat. Loved the plantains and asked for more! We pondered the enchiladas and other "typical" Mexican entrees and finally settled on the Bistec Al Estilo Capitalino which was a grilled harris ranch natural skirt steak and it was accompanied with two yummy cheese enchiladas and had a delicious mole coloradito sauce. This dish featured crispy plantain chips, salsa fresca, guacamole. We started out with house Margaritas and paired that with a delicious appetizer called Tostones - a take-off of the usual guac & chips ($9.99). Served by the attentive server JER and seated in the back area of the restaurant right by a cozy fireplace on a cold wet day certainly created a warm welcoming atmosphere. Happy we made the decision to come here and definitely will return on next. Found this delicious Mexican spot under a giant rocket in the Fremont area of Seattle. The Temptations tune “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” hit my head, and I leaned back in my seat, reminiscing of a better time and a better city. Dot Com new construction flashed by, and I knew my time had become a vestige of the past. I picked up my Uber outside El Camino, reflecting on Seattle and the 21st Century. It’s more about efficiency and productivity sadly. Warmth and friendliness are not integral parts of that equation. Seattle is an archetype of the 21st century city. I struck up an awkward conversation with a patron at the bar, Seattle doesn’t warm up to strangers. The only thing missing was Gypsy Rose at 48 cents a pint. I licked my chops in rhythm, as the vodka soothed my sensibilities. What saved El Camino were the tunes: Jackie Wilson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and the Four Tops, brought a little Great Lakes soul to the El Camino. The bartender is this symphony’s conductor. A good bar is a social center, confessional, and an escape from the monotony. I have no time for “new school” techno disengagement. My kind of bartender is a professional mixing drinks, telling stories, listening to patrons, engaging. I don’t need a robotic personality doing a job. My kind of bartender is there to pour, mix and talk. It took a few minutes to get my cocktail, and the bartender was too busy to engage. Fortunately, El Camino was open, and I found an empty. I wanted to get to a bar and gab, but most places were closed. It was interesting, in a Haight Asbury way. I was wandering around Fremont on a Monday afternoon, checking out the hood.
